Rain could not dampen the pregame excitement of Carmel fans. But the subsequent loss, and a disappointing one at that, to the Gnats had to.

The Nichols Gnats captured an easy win, 12-2, over the Carmel Apples at BLM Stadium. Matt Engelhart led the offensive barrage, going 3-for-3 for Nichols. The Gnats bumped their record to 77-77 with this latest triumph.

Marc Turner, who is tied for 9th in the TA with a .978 OPS, chipped in a run-scoring sacrifice fly for Nichols in the top of the seventh. For the game, the designated hitter had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.

"We can't expect to win," said Carmel manager Hi-yuan Pan, "when we play like that."
