Smiley Powers 3 HR Against Chippewa
Sunday, May 21st , 2062
It's a rare event when a player hits three homers in a game and rarer still when he does it and loses.
It happened at Horseshoe Park, as Matt Smiley of the Niagara Falls Barrels unloaded three times against the Chippewa River Chiefs but was still bumped off, 8-6, by the River Chiefs.
"We were lucky to win today," said Chippewa skipper Pang Yip. "You can't give up that many home runs and expect to win on a regular basis."
For the game, the Niagara Falls third baseman had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, scored 3 times, and drove in 5.
Smiley spoke to the writers in the postgame press room with mixed feelings, saying he was sad to lose but happy to be seeing the ball well.
"I was just trying to swing early and often to give myself a chance," he said. "I let the pitcher supply all the power and try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."
Matt Smiley hit a solo-shot off Danny Grotberg in the 3rd, struck out in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Jesus Troche in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off Michael Melis in the 9th.
So far this season, Smiley is hitting .316 with 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and 4 runs scored. He has 6 hits in 19 at-bats and a .381 OBP.
