Slice Spill Stogies, 7-1
|
The Manhattan Slice locked up a win at Copps Park, knocking off the Havana Stogies, 7-1. On the mound for Manhattan was left-hander Tom Simmons. He played a major role in the triumph. Manhattan is now 31-36, while Havana is 38-31.
Denis Cooper had a big 2-run triple for the Slice in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Manhattan leading 3-1 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a cutter from Mike Hutto, who is tied for 4th in the RCL in quality starts with 8, and swatted a triple to center. It was his 1st triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Slice ahead, 5-1.
Cooper said, "Whether you hit the ball hard, you walk, you have a long at-bat, 10 or 12 pitches, or you hit a homer, you're just trying to do anything you can do to help the team win."
