Critical Game 5 Goes to Host Cougars, 8-7
|
The Victoria Cougars needed some late heroics to do it, but ultimately emerged one game away from the League Championship Series. The Cougars needed 10 innings before taking the 8-7 win against the Brighton Steelhounds in a walk-off at Cougars Park. Victoria designated hitter Aleixos Gouveia was 2 for 3 with a home run and 3 walks, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. The win gives the Cougars a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-7 Divisional Series.
Batting in the bottom of the tenth, 20-year old center fielder David Bieganski had a real shot to win the game. Brighton pitcher Danny Pepin was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Bieganski hit a run-scoring single. The Cougars had a walk-off triumph.
"Walking a team off at the end -- there's no greater feeling," said Bieganski.
Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at Steelhounds Grounds in Brighton.
