The San Antonio River Bandits powered past the hometown Moonbeam Martians, 6-2, in the opener of the Single A League Championship at Abbey Stadium. San Antonio left fielder Bob Pyke hit 2 home runs for the hosts. The River Bandits now lead the series 1-0.

Alex Sanchez drew 1 walk for San Antonio. With no one out and the game tied in the top of the eighth inning, Sanchez had a clutch at-bat. Facing Moonbeam hurler Walt Edwards, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run to give the River Bandits a 3-2 lead.

"We lost," Moonbeam manager Pedro Pérez said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Abbey Stadium in Toronto.
