River Chiefs Come Back Late to Top Panthers
|
The Chippewa River Chiefs took Charleston pitcher Jeff Roark's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Franklin Mountains Field. The final score had Chippewa getting past the Panthers, 2-1. Roark went 7 innings and allowed 1 earned run, striking out 10. Chippewa reliever Kevin Hoard was the winner. His record is now 4-3. Bobby Navarro took the loss. The first-place River Chiefs, at 56-40, now lead their division by 3½ games.
The contest featured some late-game dramatics from Chippewa right fielder Jared Gerken. In the top of the eighth inning, with two out and a runner on 2nd, Gerken drew a walk to help Chippewa seize the win.
"Nice to put this one in the win column," said Gerken.
