Memphis pitcher Nick Marshall did his part in helping his team defeat the Carmel Apples, 3-1. The opposition could never get too much going against the right-hander. Daniel Bertrand earned the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. His record is now 1-0. Bobby Gottlieb collected his 18th save.

Rich Tooze came through with a big-time hit for Memphis. The second baseman smacked a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to give his team the lead, 2-1. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"We didn't string enough hits together to win the game," said tight-lipped Carmel manager Hi-yuan Pan. "Obviously."

The Apples, at 33-36, have lost 5 in a row.
