Portillo goes 3-for-4, Gnats Move to 38-23
|
The Nichols Gnats scored a 6-5 win versus the Winfield Warriors at The Pond. Nichols first baseman Jonathan Portillo nabbed top player honors in the tight contest. The win was Luis Herrera's in relief. His record improves to 5-3. Kyle Marlow took the loss for Winfield. Esteban Betances, credited with the save, is now 6 for 6 in save opportunities.
Had Alberto Corga not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Corga hit a 2-run double. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Gnats.
"I still think this team has room for improvement," Corga told the Nichols Today.
Nichols now sits at 38-23, while Winfield falls to 49-13.
