Sonoma right fielder Chris Gruber had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Gruber went 3-4 with a home run and 2 doubles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3, even as St. Petersburg beat the Scorpions, 8-7. Gruber was named the player of the game despite the loss. Earning his 7th save for St. Petersburg was Ken Harper. St. Petersburg, now 11-17, is off to a slow start.

St. Petersburg used the timely hitting of Mike Corrales to capture the win. The center fielder stroked a 2-run double in the top of the third inning to put the Pelicans on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but he made it count.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Corrales.
