Pioneers Drop Contest, 4-3, to Havana
|
In a tight contest at "The Fort" at B.C. Place, the Havana Stogies edged the Vancouver Pioneers by the score of 4-3. Havana shortstop Enrique Zarate, who blasted 1 home run, was a key contributor. Franklin Cruz got the win, improving to 5-2. He worked 6.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 9 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. Yale Fischer earned the save, his 18th, for the Stogies.
Havana used a clutch at-bat from Allen Larson to capture the win. The left fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Stogies ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
Havana manager Yen-nien Zhou commended his team for "doing what it takes to win."
Havana, at 28-17, is 3½ games up in the Roberto Clemente League Christian Latulippe Division.
