The inspired effort of Chippewa first baseman Jonathan Saldana was not enough to prevent a 9-7 loss to the San Angelo Mustangs. Saldana went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times. San Angelo reliever Ted Gray picked up the win to move to 1-1. David Conley suffered the loss. Danny Pierce recorded his 1st save for San Angelo.

San Angelo used the bat of Rich Benson to get the win. The designated hitter hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to put the Mustangs ahead, 9-7. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it did its damage.

"I like our resilience," said Benson.

The River Chiefs fall to 9-14 and continue their unimpressive start to the 2044 season.
