Spears Takes Charge, Blanks Niagara Falls, 8-0
The Niagara Falls Pipe Fitters were almost helpless in their 8-0 loss to the Boston Whitecaps and hurler John Spears. Spears kept the Pipe Fitters confused all game, spinning a 4-hit shutout.

"Tip your hat to Spears," Niagara Falls manager Bryant Thomas said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."

The 22-year-old right-hander had 1 walk and 7 strikeouts in a strong performance.

"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Spears said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."

Thus far this season, Spears has tossed 164.2 innings in 22 starts, fanned 122 batters, walked 69 and put up a 3.83 ERA with 12 wins and 8 losses.
