The Evanston Bishops wanted a good start from Dan Gardner -- and he delivered one. The result was a 5-2 Evanston win over the DeKalb Cornhuskers at The Corn Crib. The winner was Gardner. He threw 8.0 innings of 6-hit ball. The loser was Cruz Castaneda. With the victory, the Bishops record stands at 70-50.

Evanston used a timely hit from Chris Hendricks to get the win. The center fielder stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Bishops ahead, 5-2. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it made an impact.

"I got in a good groove," said Gardner. "I was getting some swings and misses."
