The Sandy Springs Spartans got a stellar performance from pitcher Jonathan Rivera, who handcuffed the Fraser Valley offense en route to a 3-1 win at The Stetson Bowl. Rivera, now 9-6, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 5, walking 3, and allowing 1 earned run. Tsutomu Mori got the save, his 7th in 9 chances.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the sixth, with the game tied, Fernando Maya was at the plate when Sandy Springs scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Spartans to go in front, 2-1.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Sandy Springs manager Doug Bergeron. "It's usually not just one thing."
Sandy Springs is now 66-53. Fraser Valley is 64-56.
