Pioneers Use Late Surge to Win
|
The Vancouver Pioneers overcame a good performance by Asheville second baseman Gabe Lesesne to knock off Asheville, 3-2, at "The Fort" at B.C. Place. Lesesne was 4-4 with a home run and 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Vancouver reliever Clay Clermont got the win, raising his record to 2-2. Jimmy LaPointe was tagged with the loss. Willie Arredondo earned the save for Vancouver, his 8th.
Fidel Martinez's at-bat in the bottom of the eighth inning was a big one for Vancouver. Coming to bat with one out, runners on 1st and 2nd and Vancouver trailing 2-1, the designated hitter hit a run-scoring single.
"You never take a win for granted in this league," said Martinez.
At 17-22, the Pioneers find themselves in 4th place in the Thurman Munson League Billy Martin Division.
