It was a good time at McCormick Field, where fans came to watch the Sandy Springs Spartans and Pacifica Shamrocks get after it.
The Sandy Springs Spartans got a sterling performance from pitcher Tony Ortiz, but the Shamrocks still prevailed, 3-1. Ortiz was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 6 innings allowing 2 runs. Pacifica reliever Alfredo Carmona picked up the win, bumping his record to 1-1. Tony Ortiz was collared with the loss.
Had Jeremy Gaines not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Gaines hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Shamrocks.
"A great team win and something real positive we can build on," said Gaines after the game.
The Shamrocks saw their win-loss record go to 20-32. At the same time, the Spartans fell to 25-24.
