Wolverines Get Close Win Over Hawks
|
The Wichita Wolverines defeated the Boise Hawks, 6-4, at Basque Block Field. Wichita first baseman Tanner Handel was named player of the game for his superb performance. He was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. Wichita reliever Ray Cummings picked up the win to move to 1-0. Mark Jones suffered the loss. Wichita is 5th in the TMLAA Jim Leyland Division with a record of 23-26.
Had Scott West not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, West hit a 2-run single. That made the score 6-4, in favor of the Wolverines.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said West. "And not try to do too much."
