Pipe Fitters Wrest Win from Bishops, 6-4
|
People outside the ballpark no doubt heard the roar of the crowd as the winning run crossed the plate.
The Niagara Falls Pipe Fitters beat the Evanston Bishops, 6-4, at Pipe Fitters Park. Niagara Falls shortstop Jeffrey Hicks had an outstanding performance. He was 2 for 2 with a double, 2 walks, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. The winner in relief was Manny Carrera. He is now 2-0. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 4.1 innings.
Niagara Falls got a clutch hit from Tom Mohundro. The designated hitter launched a 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a kill shot.
"On the outside I was calm," said Pipe Fitters manager Jonathan Kelly. "But inside I was a nervous wreck."
The Pipe Fitters, now 10-4, have played inspired baseball.
