The Niagara Falls Pipe Fitters could not turn a fine performance from designated hitter Steve Venetz into a win. Instead, the Boston Whitecaps prevailed, 7-6. Venetz was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs. David Castro picked up the win in relief for Boston, while Jason Griffith took the loss. The win puts Boston at 1-1.

Boston used the timely hitting of Jesus Pelayo to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a 2-run single in the top of the 12th inning to put the Whitecaps on top, 7-5. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
