The Vancouver Canadians got a sterling performance from pitcher Eric McNeil, but the Cacti still prevailed, 3-2. McNeil was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 8 innings of 6-hit ball. Phil Kettenring converted his 15th save in 22 tries. Albuquerque is now 85-65, 2½ games up in the RCL AAA Bobby Cox Division.
The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Mark McGwire Jr. came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Vancouver pitcher Eric McNeil, he hit a 0-1 slider for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Albuquerque on top, 3-2.
"We put it together today and came out with the win," McGwire Jr. said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
