The Calgary Cowboys weathered a fine game by Fairfield right fielder Bill Matthews to upend the Flash, 8-7, at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Matthews was 2-4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. Reliever Jeff Woods picked up the win. His record improves to 2-0. Tony Mireles took the loss. Chris Campbell earned the save for Calgary.

Calgary used the timely hitting of Govaart Hoekstra to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Cowboys on top, 7-6. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.

Hoekstra told reporters after the game: "Close wins always feel extra good."

Fairfield, with the loss, is 15-6.
