Hitmen Cut Down Sphinx, 5-2
|
The Calgary Hitmen beat the Cairo Sphinx, 5-2, at Mckinley Park. Calgary first baseman Yasuhito Kajiwara earned player of the game honors with an outstanding performance. He went 1 for 2 with a home run and 2 walks, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Dave Rowland, the winner, improved to 2-3. He held the Sphinx to 2 earned runs on 5 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 1 and walking 2. With the win, Calgary boosts its record to 9-12.
The Hitmen beat the Sphinx in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out double James Rye produced in the bottom of the first. Batting against Cairo pitcher Ben West, Rye gave his team a 3-1 lead when he hit a 2-run double.
"I'm trying to keep it simple," said Kajiwara. "Just do my job."
