Fireballs Continue Hot Start to Season With Win
|
Joplin and Astoria duked it out at Golden Fleece Park and the Fireballs came out victorious.
The Joplin Fireballs beat the Astoria Argonauts, 6-4, at Golden Fleece Park. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Mark McGwire Jr., who captured player of the game honors. He went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Brandon Swift got credit for the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. Picking up the save was Victor Pecina, his 8th.
Joplin used the timely hitting of Ed Morgan to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Fireballs on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"I was able to barrel up some pitches," said McGwire Jr..
The Fireballs, now 13-7, have been playing some good baseball.
