Pilots Deal Earthquakes 9-3 Setback
Golden Gate Park was the site for Thurman Munson League action featuring the San Francisco Earthquakes and Jacksonville Pilots.

The Jacksonville Pilots defeated the San Francisco Earthquakes, 9-3, at Golden Gate Park. Leading the charge for Jacksonville was third baseman John Popper. He went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. Russ Fought, 2-2, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 4.2 innings.

Jacksonville won the game in part because of Luis Velez. The shortstop ripped a solo home run in the top of the second inning to put the Pilots ahead, 3-2. For the game, Velez had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.

"Being able to contribute to a win is always a great feeling," Popper told the Jacksonville Herald.

The first-place Pilots now have a win-loss record of 78-60.
