Pilots Win Squeaker, 5-4, Over Warriors
|
The Jacksonville Pilots defeated the Walnut Creek Warriors, 5-4, in Thurman Munson League action at Arnold Field. John Popper pulled his weight. The 16-year veteran was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Kelvin Tolmie notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. His record now sits at 3-1. The Pilots now own a record of 71-48.
The game was decided with two out in the bottom of the ninth. With Jacksonville trailing 4-3, Popper jumped on a fastball from 24-year old right-handed pitcher Russ Gilleo and hit a 2-run home run to left-center. With one swing, the Pilots had a walk-off win.
"This game had its share of tense moments," Popper said, postgame.
