Hawaii Wins, 6-5, Over Slice
|
The Hawaii Honu spoiled a good performance by Manhattan second baseman Jong-Min Kim Jr., bumping off Manhattan, 6-5, at Copps Park. Kim Jr. was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs. Tom Mitcham, 7-5, earned the win in relief. He allowed 2 runs on 1 hit in 3 innings. Abalendu Manglarkar Jr. was called on to finish, recording his 2nd save.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Roberto Salgado came to bat in the top of the 12th. Facing Manhattan pitcher Gebre-Selassie Afiba, he hit a full count fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Hawaii on top, 4-3.
"That's what these guys do," said Honu manager Naoki Okada. "They battle, they fight."
The win makes Hawaii 66-36.
