Sandy Springs starter Raul Cortes put the Carson City offense in a vise grip. The right-hander relied heavily on his knuckle curve in leading the Spartans to a 6-1 win. The win went to Steve Roth in relief. His record improves to 5-1. Angel Aquileva took the loss. The Spartans have now won 4 straight.
Mike Shields was 2-3 with 2 singles and a walk. He drove in 2 runs for Sandy Springs. The 24-year old shortstop had a key at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring walk off Angel Aquileva. It was his 54th walk of the season.
