Southern Illinois designated hitter Kurt Burt had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Burt went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice, even as Florence beat the Miners, 4-3. Burt was named the player of the game despite the loss. Florence reliever Tony Covington picked up the win, upping his record to 4-0. Kyle Ragsdale absorbed the loss. The Y'alls, at 26-16, lead by one game in their division.

Trailing 3-1, Florence hopes soared in the bottom of the ninth inning when the 21-year old third baseman Paul Somsel lifted a full count fastball into the stands for a 3-run home run. The round-tripper put the Y'alls up, 4-3.

"We made a couple of mistakes," said Southern Illinois skipper Marco de Jesus, "and it cost us."
