Lighting Make Caribou 7-3 Losers
|
Bill Nelson did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the Frobisher Bay Caribou from being beaten, 7-3, to the Thunder Bay Lighting at Pittodrie Stadium. Nelson went 3-3 with a home run, 2 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Antonio Alvarado was the winner. Over 5 innings, he yielded 2 runs on 5 hits, with no walks and 7 strikeouts. The triumph puts Thunder Bay at 97-59 for the season.
Thunder Bay used a clutch at-bat from Bobby Vargas to capture the win. The second baseman hammered a grand slam home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Lighting ahead, 6-1. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
Vargas said afterward that his team has grown over the course of the season, adding: "It feels good when a plan comes together."
