Shields Goes Wild, But Islanders Win
|
Savannah designated hitter Brian Shields had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Shields was 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks. He scored 3 runs and drove in 5, even as Coronado beat the Peaches, 7-6. Earning the save was Ross Lane. He's now cashed in 14 of 17 save opportunities. With the victory, the Islanders record stands at 81-63.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Jon Bailey came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Savannah pitcher Oscar Fernandez, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Coronado on top, 6-5.
"It wasn't a pretty victory," said Bailey, "but we got it done."
