The Santa Clara Vampires started the Little League World Series in style, winning on the road against the Rutland Voodoos at Ballpark of Morelia HS by a score of 9-5 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Vampires designated hitter Matt Kennett excelled. He was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once.

The game turned with two out in the top of the sixth. That's when Kennett hit a grand slam home run off Mike Saldana. It propelled the Vampires into the lead, 7-5.

"I try to take on every game as if it is the most important of the season, so I don't feel like anything's different now," Kennett said after the game.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ballpark of Morelia HS in Rutland.
