Varmits Get Past Paradise Island for 6-5 Win
The losses keep piling up for the Paradise Island Pirates.

The Yuma Varmits did just enough to secure a 6-5 victory over the Paradise Island Pirates at Predator Park. Nobody did more than pitcher Zach Leckenby, who captured player of the game honors. The winning pitcher was Leckenby, now 9-5. He tossed 8 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 6. Mike Suarez was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 2 of 2 save opportunities.

Yuma used the bat of Jose Gonsales to get the win. The third baseman hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Varmits ahead, 6-4. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it did its damage.

"Zach's tempo and rhythm were good," said Varmits manager Ray Stephens. "He was the key to us winning."

Paradise Island, at 32-41, has lost 9 straight.
