Varmits Score Late, Topple Tribbles, 3-1
|
In a low-scoring affair between the Yuma Varmits and the Rosewell Tribbles, pitcher Rashad Gardner was the difference between victory and defeat. The Yuma right-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 3-1 Varmits win. Luis Valdez picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Rodolfo Loa was tagged with the loss. Picking up the save was Allen Cain, his 8th.
Melvin Silva, who is tied for 6th in the TR in stolen bases with 3, came through for Yuma with a 2-run double in the bottom of the eighth. The center fielder went 2 for 4 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and collected 3 runs batted in.
"No disrespect to the other team," said Yuma manager Phoenix Smith. "But it's nice to get an easy win."
The win gives the Varmits a record of 11-23.
