Varmits Knock Off Grognards at The Range
Yuma and St. Paul duked it out at The Range and the Varmits came out victorious.

Yuma Varmits starter Alex Escalona was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the St. Paul Grognards, 6-3. Escalona, now 7-4, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 8, walking 3, and allowing 3 earned runs.

The Grognards had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Varmits going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 22-year old shortstop Bill Groves came to the plate. Groves hit a run-scoring single on a 1-2 splitter from St. Paul hurler Scott Heck. It was Groves's 5th hit of the year.

"I was determined to go the distance," said Escalona.

The Varmits go to 36-33, putting them second in the TMLR Otto Velez Division.
