Yuma Wins, 5-2
The Yuma Varmits rode a solid performance from 18-year-old starting pitcher Chris Buonopane to a win, beating the Coronado Islanders, 5-2, at Barack H. Obama Park. Marco Gurrola notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 3 innings. His record now sits at 1-0. Earning his 16th save of the year was Joel Valrie.

Yuma used the timely hitting of Rich Patterson to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Varmits on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.

Patterson attributed the win to his team's "dogged determination."

The Varmits saw their win-loss record go to 56-55. At the same time, the Islanders fell to 60-50.
