Powered by Jason Merck, the Key West Thunder downed the Caribbean Commies, 8-2. Merck was 2-4 with a home run and 2 walks, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once for the Thunder. Alex Alvarado was the winner. He's now 1-0. The loser was 19-year old left-handed pitcher Jesus Ruiz. Nariyuki Ishizaki nailed down the save.
With Key West leading 5-2 in the top of the ninth, Merck hit a fastball from Alex Soto for a 3-run home run. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Thunder ahead, 8-2.
"It's always great to put the barrel on the ball and contribute," said Merck.
The defeat makes the Commies 5-10.
