Vampires Get One-Run Win at Billings West
|
Both teams had their chances, but the Santa Clara Vampires eventually prevailed at Guadalajara HS Grounds.
The Santa Clara Vampires turned back the Billings West Golden Bears, 7-6, at Guadalajara HS Grounds. Stu Dial was named player of the game for his fine performance. He went 3-4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 runs. Santa Clara reliever Josh Toomey picked up the win, upping his record to 1-2. Daniel Rogers shouldered the loss. Marty Allred sewed up the save, his 7th.
The result might have been different for Santa Clara, had it not been for Alex Melendez. The center fielder produced a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to put the Vampires ahead, 7-6. For the game, Melendez had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"I don't feel you win baseball games by working harder than the other team or 'wanting it more,'" Dial told the Santa Clara Daily. "You win just by scoring more runs."
Santa Clara is now 26-27, Billings West 22-31.
