Martinsburg Loss Tarnishes Fine Game by Cortez
Roger Cortez did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the Martinsburg Maulers from being beaten, 9-7, to the Kingston Beats at Beats Park. Cortez was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Mark Rardin closed it out for his 5th save. The Beats go to 52-76 with the win.

Juan Maldonado had a big grand slam home run for the Beats in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Kingston leading 5-3 and the bases loaded, he sized up a slider from 20-year old right-handed pitcher Ivan Valdes and punished it. The result was his 12th home run of the season, which put the Beats on top, 9-3.

"If I do my job, we've usually got a good chance to win the game," said Maldonado.
