The Stanford Cardinals got a sterling performance from pitcher Brett Smallwood, but the Sun Devils still prevailed, 2-1. Smallwood was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 6 innings of 1-hit ball. Arizona State reliever Ray Goebel picked up the win to move to 1-0. Shane Chilton suffered the loss. Bryce Mayers closed the game out for Arizona State, earning his 11th save.
Arizona State used the clutch hitting of Alan Gallagher to capture the win. The first baseman drilled a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Sun Devils ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a big one.
"We put together a nice win," Gallagher said.
Arizona State occupies 18th place in the Cliff Gustafson at 20-24.
