The South Illinois Salukis grabbed a 5-4 win over the Miami Hurricanes at Field of the Shield. South Illinois designated hitter Danny Najera went 2 for 4 with a double, while adding 4 RBI to earn player of the game honors. Tom Paliwoda got the win, improving to 3-2. He worked 5.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 2. The Salukis, now 18-23, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.

The Hurricanes had been locked in a 4-4 tie with the Salukis going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 19-year old center fielder Ryan Richardson came to the plate. Richardson hit a run-scoring single on a 2-2 fastball from Miami hurler Kevin Lawson. It was Richardson's 28th hit of the year.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Najera said.
