The Virginia Cavaliers stopped the Clemson Tigers, 8-3, at Magistrates Ballpark. The Cavaliers got a big game from Joseph Mattice, who went 2 for 4 with a home run. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Kevin McCarthy picked up the win, improving his season record to 2-0. He struck out 2 in 5.1 innings. Heath James sewed up the save, his 1st.

Virginia took a 5-2 lead on Mattice's 3rd home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which he hit off Gavin Wiggin in the top of the sixth, propelled Virginia to the win.

"Feels good to get the job done," Mattice said after the game.

The 4th-place Cavaliers improved to 20-17.
