The North Carolina Tar Heels could not turn a fine performance from second baseman Nick Pendergrass into a win. Instead, the South Illinois Salukis prevailed, 9-5. Pendergrass went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. South Illinois reliever Erik Alspaugh picked up the win, while Danny Armstrong took the loss for North Carolina. South Illinois, now 21-12, holds down 4th place in the Ron Fraser Division.

Jeff Holmes had a key at-bat with one out in the bottom of the fifth for South Illinois. With the bases loaded and the Salukis leading 6-5, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run.
