Bears Stymie Rice, Take 7-1 Win
|
The Baylor Bears topped the Rice Owls, 7-1, with second baseman Danny Stokes playing a big role. Stokes went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times for the Bears in the win. Matt Whitford, the winner, improved to 1-1. He held Rice to 1 earned run on 4 hits over 5 innings, while racking up 6 strikeouts. David Dixon earned his 2nd save in 2 tries.
Baylor left fielder Steve Morrison had a key at-bat for the Bears in the bottom of the second inning. Facing right-hander Ernesto Perez, Morrison hit a 2-run home run. It put Baylor in front, 2-1. For the day, Morrison went 2 for 4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once.
"It's always nice to be on the winning side," Stokes told the Baylor Daily News. "But we take nothing for granted."
Baylor, at 14-16, occupies 19th place in the Cliff Gustafson.
