|
The exploits of third baseman Jim Ellis helped the Long Beach State 49'ers defeat the South Mississippi Golden Eagles, 9-1. Ellis slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Long Beach State starter Johnny Miller was credited with the win after throwing 83 pitches over 6 innings. His record now stands at 3-1. The 49'ers saw their record improve to 9-11.
One important at-bat came with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning. Facing South Mississippi hurler Terry Gold, John Kersey, who is tied for 3rd in the RDL in bases on balls with 17, hit a sacrifice fly. The 49'ers went on to win.
"It was a solid team effort," said Ellis after the game.
