Cougars Down Golden Bears, 5-2
|
Riding the 2-hit performance of the 18-year old first baseman Avery Engle, the Washington State Cougars defeated the California Golden Bears, 5-2. Monty Embree came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The left-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. His record now stands at 1-0. Sam Mikolajczyk got the save, the 7th for him this season.
The Cougars got a big at-bat from shortstop Brian Cranston. For the game, Cranston was 1-4 with a triple, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 2-run triple. His 2nd triple of the season gave Washington State a 2-0 lead.
Said losing manager Caiden Greenshield: "It's very easy to sit in an ivory tower and critique the pitching, but the bottom line is we need to score runs."
Washington State is now 11-6.
