Cardinals Best Golden Eagles in Pitching Duel
|
Angelo Valverde never let South Mississippi get something going. The Stanford left-hander commanded his fastball in pitching the Cardinals to a 1-0 win. Valverde, now 1-0, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 6, walking 1, and allowing no earned runs. Jody Redman sewed up the save, his 2nd.
In the bottom of the first, Stanford first baseman Dan Jones had a productive at-bat. With a runner on 3rd and one out, Jones stroked a run-scoring single to right-center. It made the score 1-0, Stanford. For the game, he went 2 for 3 with 2 singles.
Jones said the team appreciates the support from the fans. "I'm glad we could reward them with a good win," he said after the game.
The Cardinals' win now puts them at 8-6.
