Martinsburg Edges Steelhounds, 8-7, Wood Clutch
|
The Martinsburg Maulers downed the Brighton Steelhounds, 8-7, at Steelhounds Grounds. The Maulers were led by Lawrence Wood. Wood was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Martinsburg reliever Jonathan Pagan picked up the win to move to 2-1. Ricky Villegas suffered the loss. David Salgado earned the save for Martinsburg.
Martinsburg used the timely hitting of Akiharu Hori to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Maulers on top, 8-7. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"You can't hate how you win if you win," said Martinsburg skipper Austin Alexander.
Despite the defeat, Brighton still has a fine 17-8 record.
