Sun Devils designated hitter Johnny Bird left his imprint on his team's 13-6 win over the UCLA Bruins. Bird slugged 2 home runs, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 5 for Arizona State in the contest. Arizona State reliever Kevin Helton picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Matt Howie was saddled with the loss. Art Mull, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 2nd save.

With Arizona State trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Bird hit a fastball from Matt Howie for a 3-run home run. It was his 7th home run of the season and put the Sun Devils ahead, 5-3.

"I'm trying to see the ball big, see the ball up in the zone and put the barrel on it," Bird told the Arizona State Today.

The win boosted Arizona State to 8-4.
