Wild Things Hammer Miners, 14-2
|
The Washington Wild Things pounded the Sussex County Miners, 14-2, at Commodores Ballpark. Washington right fielder Brian Hensley was named player of the game for his performance. He went 2-5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 4. Tony Vickers, the winner, improved to 2-0. He held the Miners to 1 earned run on 5 hits over 6 innings, while striking out 5 and walking 2. The 4th-place Wild Things are now 29-34, the Miners 29-34.
Washington used the timely hitting of Bob Griffin to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Wild Things on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"They took us to the woodshed," said Sussex County manager Jimmy Short.
