Grizzlies Score Late to Upend Miners, 5-2
|
The Southern Illinois Miners got a superb performance from pitcher Ian Wilson. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Gateway. The Grizzlies won the game, 5-2. In spite of the loss, Wilson was named the player of the game. He threw 5 innings of shutout ball. Even with the win, the Grizzlies have a dismal 15-36 record.
Gateway used the timely hitting of Chris Barss to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Grizzlies on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Grizzlies manager John Richmond. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
